The nails are thickened and become discolored, and they even separate from the underlying skin or nail bed. Sometimes they crumble away.

(1) Thinning of the nail or utilizing surgery to remove the nail temporarily or permanently to prevent it from coming back.
(2) Occasionally medication is applied directly to the nail bed or taken orally for a short period of time to attempt to remove the fungus from the nail.
